Developmental Occupational Therapy

At SoftSteps OT, we offer comprehensive developmental assessments for children from Pre-Primary through to Year 5. Every assessment is individually tailored to your child, and followed up with clear, actionable recommendations.

Areas of Support

Handwriting

Handwriting difficulties are one of the most common reasons families seek OT support — and one of the most impactful areas to address early. We assess the underlying skills that make handwriting easy or difficult, and work with your child and their teacher to build confidence in the classroom.

This may help if your child:

  • Has messy or illegible handwriting

  • Tires quickly when writing or avoids written tasks

  • Is falling behind classmates with written work

  • Has been flagged by their teacher for handwriting concerns

Fine Motor

Fine motor skills are the small, precise movements children use constantly throughout the school day — cutting, drawing, tying shoelaces, and writing. When these skills are delayed, even simple tasks can feel frustrating. We assess where the difficulties lie and use play-based activities to build the strength and coordination your child needs.

This may help if your child:

  • Has difficulty with scissors, buttons, or zips

  • Struggles with drawing, colouring, or craft activities

  • Avoids tasks that involve detailed hand work

  • Tires quickly during fine motor activities

  • Has noticeably weaker hands compared to peers

Attention and Concentration

Difficulty with attention can look like many things. A child who can't sit still, who rushes through work, or who falls apart when asked to do something that doesn't interest them. These challenges affect learning, relationships, and self-esteem, and they're rarely about effort or attitude. We look at the sensory, motor, and environmental factors involved and work with you and the school to put practical strategies in place.

This may help if your child:

  • Has difficulty staying on task at school or home

  • Is easily distracted or overwhelmed in busy environments

  • Struggles to transition between activities

  • Is impulsive or has difficulty waiting their turn

  • Becomes dysregulated during or after school

Sensory Processing

Some children experience sensory information differently, becoming overwhelmed by sounds, textures, or busy environments, or constantly seeking movement and stimulation. These differences are real, common, and very manageable with the right support. We develop practical strategies that work at home, at school, and everywhere in between.

This may help if your child:

  • Is very sensitive to sounds, clothing, food textures, or touch

  • Becomes overwhelmed in busy or noisy environments like school

  • Constantly seeks movement, crashing, spinning, or physical input

  • Has strong reactions to transitions or unexpected changes

  • Struggles to settle or self-regulate throughout the day

Gross Motor

Gross motor skills underpin not just sport and play, but also posture, attention, and even handwriting. Children who struggle in this area often find PE, the playground, and group activities difficult and discouraging. We assess your child's movement, strength, and coordination, and design fun targeted programs to build the physical foundations they need.

This may help if your child:

  • Seems unusually clumsy or trips and bumps into things often

  • Avoids sport, PE, or playground activities

  • Has poor posture or tires quickly when sitting

  • Struggles with ball skills, jumping, or climbing

  • Was a late walker or had early gross motor concerns

Access and Participation

Access and participation is about making sure your child can engage meaningfully in all aspects of the school day, not just academically, but socially, physically, and practically. We look at your child's whole school environment and advocate for the supports and adjustments that allow them to participate fully alongside their peers.

This may help if your child:

  • Has physical difficulties that affect their access to school activities

  • Needs seating or equipment adjustments to participate comfortably

  • Is being excluded from activities due to physical or sensory challenges

  • Has a diagnosis or developmental concern impacting school participation

  • Would benefit from a teacher consultation or school environment review
